Small footprint, Big return. We've seen a 100 person crew struggling with a single polar bear on location? We do it with two, and we do it non-invasively, in the wild. We shoot scripted action, atmospheric transitions, and wildlife inserts with zero drama-crew drag. Our risk assessments include big cats, wolves, bears, venomous snakes, and Arctic nights.
The result: more days on location, more serendipity, authenticity, the best natural light, lower daily rate, no animals disturbed.

Development
From concept to commission. We develop original IP with built-in conservation hooks, character-driven narratives, and field-validated science. Current slate: a returnable wildlife format, an animated drama series, and a dramatised natural history feature film. 100+ combined field years across the expert team generating new ideas.

The light you wait for. Drama crews cost £50k+/day. We work lean (4-10 people), stay longer, and capture the magic light that VFX departments beg for. Our plates have fed into Planet Earth–grade sequences. We understand the workflow, the cost levers, and how to make real footage match previz.

Photoreal behaviour, not guesswork. Three veterans of Prehistoric Planet (Apple TV+). Two PhDs in zoology. More than 100 scientific papers. Decades of field observation across canids, felids, megafauna, combined with a deep knowledge of extinct species and phylogenetic behavioural bracketing. We don't just know anatomy – we know micro-gestures: pupil dilation, breath timing, submissive tail carriage. We plug directly into your VFX pipeline from previz to final render. Fast and on point feedback when the unstoppable VFX machine starts moving.

Each one of us at Painted Wolf cares passionately about the natural world. Outside of film we all have our own projects either directly or indirectly supporting nature. We keep wild bees. We plant wild meadows. We build wildlife ponds. We protect forests. We survey and record biodiversity. We advise and help with community-based projects.
When it comes to our film projects - our approach is motivated by storytelling that will shift the dial in favour of a more sustainable future. We widen our lenses - reveal the truths so often hidden from our audiences. But we are always careful to bring hope, inspire and connect people or reconnect them to that essential part of ourselves - our wilder selves.
